Auto Parts FAQs

When were electric cars invented?

Ransom Olds produced a small number of electric cars around the turn of the century. Little is known about them and none survive. However, for a brief window, electrics outsold all other type of cars. They have since faded away, at least as far as mass production is concerned, but fuel efficiency concerns suggest a resurgence in the popularity of the electric car.

What are hybrid automobiles referred to as “hybrid”? What does that mean?

“Hybrid” refers to the fact that these vehicles use two different sources to power the vehicle, usually an internal combustion engine as well as one or more electric motors.

I have a car, but I would like to update some of the features and accessories. Can I do this alone, or do I need an expert?

That depends on your own level of expertise. Some car repairs, such as replacing a broken headlight, are fairly straightforward and easy to figure out. However, you don’t want to exacerbate the problem by undertaking a task that you have no idea how to do. There is a lot of information available online and in training DVDs for improving the body of your car, but it doesn’t hurt to have an extra, seasoned set of eyes look it over, either. Moreover, some tasks people might think they can do by themselves, such as re-painting the car, actually require a great deal of expertise and are probably better handled by a professional.

As the seasons change, what precautions do I need to take with my car?

Temperature and weather can alter in the performance of your vehicle. To prevent this, there are a few things to watch out for. First, when it is cold, be sure to check the viscosity of your engine oil and ensure that it is correct. Cold atmospheres can cause oil to thicken.

Make sure the proper water-to-antifreeze mixture is sustained throughout winter. Always make sure that your windshield wipers are working and that you keep the washer fluid full.
Finally, cold temperatures can cause rubber to shrink and crack, so it’s worth going over your hoses and belts to ensure that they remain flexible and that they are working properly.
